16 Fun and hair-raising spooky stories
This is a collection of 16 spooky and creepy stories. Some of them are horror stories, some of them are paranormal stories and some of them are historical fiction depicting dark events in the past. All of them are spellbinding and interesting. There are spider dances, ghosts, séances, human sacrifice, sirens, murders, mass murderers, deadly diseases, icy magical mountains, enraged gods, volcanoes, 500-year-old history, war and poisoning, baby farming, gruesome death, chimney sweep children, and much more. Many of the stories end in death but some of them have happy endings.
The stories are fiction and quite imaginative, but they all have a background in reality whether it is a historical event or some gruesome tradition or myth from the past. At the end of each story the author has an “About” section explaining the background to the story. This ends up being quite educational. At least I learned a lot from reading the About sections, and sometimes I also googled the information to learn more.
I think my favorite story was Glass Mountain. This was a science fiction-like story taking place in the future. A group of young men participate in a reality TV game show. If they succeed in their quest, they will be rich. They are supposed to climb a mysterious and icy mountain called Glass Mountain. The problem is that no one comes back from the climb, and the young men eventually found out why. Another fascinating story was the siren who was raised as a human vegetarian, which is like trying to make your cat a vegetarian. Her father also did not allow her to sing. As you may guess, she grew up.
Above all these 16 stories are very entertaining. I love spooky stories and these stories were thrilling, unique, creative and very well written. I highly recommend this book.

Thomas, a terrific review of ‘And the Grave Awaits’! Its spooky nature yet sense of fun has me intrigued and I like how you describe the collection overall and then especially the Glass Mountain- I want to know more! 😀 The about section after each story sounds inspired as I always want to learn about the backstory of books, stories etc. I must say I am also taken with the dramatic cover, the juxtaposition of the black & white and the coloured red roses works brilliantly and incredibly eye-catching! A book I want to read! Congratulations, Robbie on this superlative review. Wishing you both a lovely weekend. 😀

Thank you so much Annika for your kind words. Yes I liked the imaginative surprises, the great story telling as well as the revealing of the truth behind the story in the end. In the past people could really be terrible. I agree the cover is quite interesting too.

HI Annika, I am thrilled by Thomas’ review. I am especially delighted he enjoyed Glass Mountain because I really like that particular story. Your comments about the cover are very pleasing as I drew the cover myself and its my first attempt at a cover design. Have a wonderful weekend, Annika.

Thank you so much Annika. I liked all stories but especially Glass Mountain because it was so imaginative and surprising. Naturally I should not reveal any surprises in a review. I wish you and Robbie a great weekend too.

This is such a great review of Robbie’s book, Thomas. She is such a talented author and a very smart Lady.
I was saving this book for Halloween, but I might start reading it sooner based on your recommendation.

Hi Patricia, Thomas has written an extraordinary review and I am very thrilled he enjoyed Glass Mountain. That story started with just an idea for a frozen mountain that was ‘glassy’ and impossible to climb. I hope you enjoy this book when you get to it. Halloween is just around the corner. I saw that Teri Polen was already talking about Dark Moon Rising this week.

Hi Jacqui, thank you for your lovely comment and for your review. I think this is more paranormal and historical than horror but there are a few darker stories like the two Thomas mentioned included. Those are both based on mythology.

HI Jan, thank you for your lovely comment and support. I am very pleased to know you enjoyed Glass Mountain as I particularly enjoyed writing that one. The story of the radium girls is very tragic. I couldn’t agree more.

I had to look up more about that story in wikipedia and elsewhere. It was very sad that the women died, but it changed life for millions coming after, and I did not even know about this history before I read your book.

I am very pleased I could introduce you to this important piece of history. I am actually working on a much longer book about the radium girls and WW1 but it is slow going with all the research involved.

Wow that sounds really interesting. I am looking forward to that book.

Thank you so much Jan. Yes the Radium Girls. So many stupid and ignorant mistakes were made in past and even though it was sad it led to important laws and protections we so much enjoy today. The radium girls was one of stories that led me to look up, starting with wikipedia. An incredible story, both Robbie’s fiction of it, but the reality as well.

Hi Thomas, it is a fascinating story with a double edged sword outcome. The girls all died horribly but it changed the law for workers going forward.

Great reviews Thomas. Your posts remind me of what an avid reader I used to be and that I do miss not having the time to read as much as I did. I too enjoy horror and sci-fi so Glass Mountain does appeal.

Yes I am lucky I could retire early. We are in good shape. My doctor says that I am pretty good health and should have many years ahead of me to do what I want. A collegue at work was going to retire at 65 and he died at 64 1/2 from an unexpected hearth attack. You never know.

HI Thomas, it is nice to be able to retire early and do things you want to do. Once people get into their 80s, they often can’t do a lot of things any more so getting to your dreams earlier is better.
