I am testing themes with sidebars

I am trying out a new wordpress theme. I previously had twenty twenty. This is twenty sixteen. Twenty twenty did not have a sidebar and I wanted a sidebar so I could remove all the book cover images and have them placed in the sidebar. That way the posts could be about just the post topic. I am not sure what to think about it. The comment/like link (to the left) is hard to see and all 160 posts I’ve ever made are crammed on top of each other on the landing page, well that’s https://leonbergerlife.com/

Do you have a sidebar on your site? Which theme are you using?

I have to think this through. Any opinions are welcome.

My name is Thomas Wikman. I am a software/robotics engineer with a background in physics. I am currently retired. I took early retirement. I am a dog lover, and especially a Leonberger lover, a home brewer, craft beer enthusiast, I’m learning French, and I am an avid reader. I live in Dallas, Texas, but I am originally from Sweden. I am married to Claudia, and we have three children. I have two blogs. The first feature the crazy adventures of our Leonberger Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle as well as information on Leonbergers. The second blog, superfactful, feature information and facts I think are very interesting. With this blog I would like to create a list of facts that are accepted as true among the experts of the field and yet disputed amongst the public or highly surprising. These facts are special and in lieu of a better word I call them super-facts.

  1. I like how this looks a lot. I use the Newspaper theme by TagDiv but it’s for self-hosted websites. I didn’t know if you’re self-hosted or not, so thought I’d throw that out there. lol

Personally, I like looking at sidebars. Do you like how it looks?

    1. Thank you for the suggestion Kymber. I am using wordpress.com, not self hosted, but I’ll make a note about it. One day I may do self-hosted via wordpress.org and maybe godaddy. I really want sidebars. I’ve been posting pictures/links to my book in every post and it’s annoying. With a sidebar I can go back and clean all that up. However, with 20/16 there are a few features I lost compared to 20/20 so I will probably try a few more.

      1. I started out at wp.com and liked it until I decided I wanted my theme to do more. So, I bought the wp.com plan where you can add CSS coding to change the look of the theme. I had so much fun with that, learning how to code. Then, I switched to wp.org and I can make my theme do whatever I want; the possibilities are endless. I love to tweak my site (and I mean all the time, I’m tweaking it here and there lol) so this is how I’ve been happiest.

    2. That’s very impressive Kymber. I certainly know how to program but not website related stuff so much (embedded machine software for me), and I wanted to focus on the content. Therefore, I chose the easiest, which was wp.com. However, that might change as I get more into it. Thank you so much for your informative comment Kymber.

  2. I have sidebars on mine. My sidebars are so heavily loaded I’m surprised the browser doesn’t tip over when people visit. I’m using the Penscratch 2 theme on my author site and the Colinear theme on the animals’ blog.

  3. I use the Quintus Theme on my blog. It has a sidebar, which I mostly use for links to my other sites, such as my main author site, and my Patreon page.

If I have my browser in full-screen mode on my laptop, your sidebar test looks readable and attractive. It shrinks down a bit if I have my browser in “window” mode, but it’s still noticeable.

  4. HI Thomas, I have a sidebar on both my blogs and they are pretty crammed with books. I also create a page for my books and I have anthology pages too so all my books and stories are showcased. I am not sure what themes I use, haha, I am not good at that sort of thing. I just tried a few until one worked for what I wanted and I’ve kept that one. I like the books in a sidebar, it looks very neat and tidy.

    1. Yes I see that. It looks good. I agree, a sidebar is much better than cramming a book into the bottom of every post. I will add a few more things to the sidebar and remove all my book images from the bottom of all 100+ of my posts. Thank you Roberta.
