Amazon’s description of the book
This collection of haiku challenges the traditional Japanese poetic art form. Experimenting with darker images and ideas, I have created non-traditional observations that address the other side of literature and life: monsters, ghosts, natural fears, supernatural forces, fearful gods and goddesses, and whatever constitutes the Otherworld. This book was written for people who like Halloween, scary stories, and being alone in the dark.

Spooky Fun in the form of Poetry
Haiku for the midnight hour feature more than 200 spooky Haiku poems divided into 17 chapters. All poems and chapters feature a different theme. There are poems about scary animals, paranormal beings, folklore, ghosts and demons, monsters, death, outer space, fairy tales, magic, occult practices, and much more. My two favorite chapters were Spellbinding and Wee Folk.
The poems are imaginative, varied, original, different, entertaining and a lot of fun to read, especially if you are into Halloween and all things spooky, like I am. I also learned something about paranormal beings and folklore that I did not know before. Do you know what Dagda, Samhein, Arachne, Nyarlathotep, or Lughnasadh is? I think Halloween and scary stories are about imagination, pushing the limits of reality, and having fun, and that is what this poetry book is about. It is not your typical Haiku poem book. I highly recommend Haiku for the midnight hour.
Other books by Dawn Pisturino
I should add that I was also delighted to find myself mentioned in the authors afterword regarding one of her other books.

Thank you so much Sue. It was great to be with my son and his wife and spend time with an old classmate I have not seen for more than 35 years. Also we saw many beautiful things and had a good time. I am looking forward to Halloween. It is a fun holiday. I wish you a great week as well.

So pleased you had a great family time together Thomas, and Halloween here in England has gained popularity over the years.. But it is still not on the scale of the USA.. 🙂 Often the weather puts a dampener on the door trick or treating.. 🙂

Here in Texas we have the best weather in October, well except for when there is some big storm, like five years ago we had a tornado destroy the neighborhood. But right now it is sunny every day and the temperature is between 20 Celsius early in the morning and 35 Celsius in the afternoon, and allegedly it will be this way for at least a week. The temperature is typically comfortable at the end of October. So the weather is rarely upsetting Halloween here.

I purchased the Ebook when it was published but haven’t gotten time to read it yet. But I’m excited to do so next month, I feel like it’s more appropriate for October anyway with Halloween and everything.

Hi Thomas, it’s odd as I’m sure I’ve read this review before. I looked back in your posts and didn’t find it so it’s weird for me. anyhow. An excellent review. I’m just about finished reading this book.

It is certainly the first time I am posting this but for book reviews I tend to have the same general layout and I’ve used Dawn’s photo before other reviews. Maybe one of those things made it seem familiar. Anyway, thank you so much Robbie.

Afterwards, I realised I had read your review of her other book. I’ve read several good reviews of this collection so it was probably my mind having a wiggle.

I like spooky poems! I had a book of them when I was younger that came with a 45 of people reading the poems. Early multimedia, I guess?

Was it 45 people reading the poems in the book as an audio book? That sounds very interesting.

This really stokes the imagination and creates happy memories for young readers. For me, it was “The Halloween Tree” by Ray Bradbury! 🎃

I love Ray Bradbury but I have not read the “The Halloween Tree”. Maybe I should buy it. It seems like a book I would enjoy.
