This blog feature amusing and heartwarming stories about our late Leonberger dog Bronco, as well as other Leonbergers. It also has a lot of information about the Leonberger breed, the history, care, training, Leonberger organizations, etc. I also wrote a Leonberger book, which I am featuring in the sidebar.
National Love Your Pet Day
I was alerted to the existence of National Love Your Pet Day by this post. Because I was busy all day I did not get a chance to post anything until now. However, it is still National Love Your Pet Day here where I live.
National Love Your Pet Day is an annual observance dedicated to celebrating animals. With this post I just wanted to show some photos of our current dog the mini-Australian Shepherd Rollo and our past dogs the Labrador Baylor (mix ¼ Rhodesian Ridgeback), the German Shepherd Baby, our big Leonberger Bronco, or Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle, our Japanese Chin Ryu and our Pug Daisy. We love(d) them all and will forever be in our hearts.
Photos of our Dogs
My wife Claudia and our first family dog the Labrador Baylor. This was back in the day. Our niece gave us Baylor because she was going to college. In turn she had gotten him from a shelter. He was a mix, one quarter Rhodesian Ridgeback and three quarters Yellow Labrador. He was able to jump up into the trunk of our van. Baylor was my first dog (not my wife’s first dog), and he taught me a lot about being a dog parent. Our Labrador Baylor is swimming in Claudia’s parents pool. He loved swimming, and he loved that pool and swam in it a lot.Our German Shepherd Baby at the dog park. Our Labrador Baylor and our German Shepherd Baby. Baylor was older in this picture. We had just gotten our Leonberger Bronco. This is our Leonberger Bronco (Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle) at three months old.Bronco our Leonberger dog was a very affectionate dog.Our Leonberger Bronco (Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle), our Japanese Chin Ryu, and our Pug Daisy in the front right. At the White Rock Lake dog park. Daisy and our Japanese Chin Ryu were very close, like a couple. Daisy was obviously grieving when Ryu died, from cancer a bit early at only ten years old. Bronco was grieving as well.Daisy is exhausted after doing nothing for a whole day.Our Leonberger Bronco sleeping on our big red leather sofa. Our old Leonberger dog Bronco is coming up to me. Love Your Pets Every Day
Feel free to add links to your posts about pets in the comments. There is a maximum of two links per comment (how it is set up) so if you want to post many links you need to spread it out over many comments. I am late so don’t worry your comment being late. Any day is fine.
My name is Thomas Wikman. I am a software/robotics engineer with a background in physics. I am currently retired. I took early retirement. I am a dog lover, and especially a Leonberger lover, a home brewer, craft beer enthusiast, I’m learning French, and I am an avid reader. I live in Dallas, Texas, but I am originally from Sweden. I am married to Claudia, and we have three children. I have two blogs. The first feature the crazy adventures of our Leonberger Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle as well as information on Leonbergers. The second blog, superfactful, feature information and facts I think are very interesting. With this blog I would like to create a list of facts that are accepted as true among the experts of the field and yet disputed amongst the public or highly surprising. These facts are special and in lieu of a better word I call them super-facts.

Dogs have added so much joy to our lives over the years. Baylor was a beautiful dog. We’ve had a lot of labs over the years, and every one has been a wonderful animal.
Thank you so much for kind words Pete. Baylor was our favorite Hello and Hardest goodbye. It is great to hear that you had a lot of labs over the years.
I will try to remember it next time. This post was a bit late, still on Friday in Texas though. He certainly could take up an entire sofa, a big sofa, as well as a bed. We got rid of that sofa because the seat was too wide. If you leaned towards the back your legs had to be pointing forward. It was not comfortable. However, Bronco loved it.
Thank you so much Debbie and I remember your beautiful post from last year. I should have remembered Love Your Pet Day just from that. You had/have so many great photos.
I’ve heard of this day last year when Jacqui and Debbie D posted (in 2025), but I completely forgot. I saw Jacquie post but was too busy to post in a good time. Your cat is definietly your pet and you are her pets. Thank you Stacey.
Love the pic of Bronco on the couch. We call that the Pure Bliss position.
Didn’t know about the celebratory day. We went out for lunch today and were able to take Maya into the tearooms. There were three shelties who combined didn’t make half of Maya, but there was no barking or growling from them or her.
Yes that sofa was perfect for Bronco but it was hard to sit in for humans. If you look closely you can see how far the edge of the seating is from the back. If you wanted to lean back you had to have your legs straight. We eventually donated the sofa after Bronco passed. It was his sofa. It is great that you were able to take Maya to the tea room She is such a good dog. I found out about this day from Jacqui and Debbie D last year but I completely forgot about it.
What a great post, Thomas! We miss Copper and can’t believe it’s been almost a year. But all of our dogs have brought so much love and joy. Thanks for sharing the love! Your photos are wonderful!
Thank you so much for your kind words Lauren. I know you miss Copper a lot and you wrote such a beautiful poetry book about him. Dogs are wonderful people and saying goodbye is hard. They live forever in our hearts.
Great photos of good looking dogs! I missed the day but do love my pets every day, even when Marley digs holes or eats deer poop in the woods which he loves.
Thank you so much JoAnna. Rollo eats poop but none of our other dogs did. I also think Rollo may have stopped doing that. I have not seen him do it in a while. It is funny that Marley eat deer poop. Stopping them from digging holes is tough. I believe that is an instinct.
Your love for all your dogs shines through, Thomas. During my married life I only had two dogs, a wire haired terrier/schnauzer mix and a Jack Russel Terrier. Both lived to be 15 years old. I miss not having a dog anymore, but have two granddogs that I can lavish my love on.
Thank you so much Carla. It sounds like your dogs lived long and happy lives. I am sorry for your loss. It is wonderful that you now have granddogs to lavish your love on.
Thank you Lulu. Yes you are right, from Japanese Chin (16-17lbs) to slightly overweight Leonberger (167lbs), that is 10 times. Luckily it was the Japanese Chin who liked to jump on the Leonbergers stomach and not the other way around.

I didn’t know about “love your pet” day either. I like the photo of Bronco sprawled on the sofa. That’s contentment!

I really miss having a dog. I had a Pomeranian named Hercules that was my best friend. But I haven’t had one since. I loved seeing all your pictures.
