25 Waterberger Photos

Today is the two-year anniversary of my blog and this is the 215th post.

My blog is primarily about Leonbergers, an unusual and fascinating dog breed that is known for its size, affectionate nature, and intelligence. We were lucky enough to live with one for thirteen years. His name was Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle—but we called him “Bronco” for short. I also wrote a book about Leonbergers and about Bronco’s many adventures : The Life and Times of Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle. Leonbergers love to swim and so did our Bronco. This post features 25 photos of Leonbergers in the water, which is why the title of the post is 25 Waterberger photos. Most of the photos are of our Leonberger Bronco in White Rock Lake in Dallas. He loved to chase ducks and egrets, but catching is difficult. In the end he had no egrets. One of the photos is from a friend and there are a few stock photos.     1. Thank you so much Kymber. Yes he really loved to swim. As soon as we arrived at White Rock lake he ran to the shore and went right in. The water in White Rock Lake looked muddy, especially by the shore, but it was clean and full of fish, and birds and snakes. The lake is located right outside Dallas and was a 15 minute drive from our house.

    1. Thank you Gwen. Yes he kind of looked like a bear. Once when I walked by a neighbor’s house, a neighbor who let his big black dogs run lose, he shouted to his wife “honey come get the dogs. Someone is walking a bear out here”.

    1. Thank you Denise. Ever since I made my first Facebook post about him swimming and chasing birds I’ve been using that joke. You might have heard it before. You are right, he was full of cheers, loved to play and run and swim.

  13. Happy blogaversary today Thomas and here’s to many more. I really enjoyed today’s post. He was just a big gentle giant it looked liked. Oh how much fun he had in the water I see. Thanks for sharing these wonderful and fun pictures today.

    1. Thank you so much Deanne. Yes you are right, Bronco was a big gentle giant. He was playful, kind, protective of our small dogs and as you said he had a lot of fun in the water. Sometimes we worried when he swam really far out but he always came back.

  18. Ahh, Bronco in the kiddie pool 🐶

    I’ve never heard of a Leonberger owner or breeder in the Philippines. I wonder if they’re okay in a hot climate like ours. Most breeds I know of that are common in my country are German Shepherd, Shih Tzu, and Golden Retriever. We used to have a family of Siberian Husky, though.

    1. I don’t know how hot it is in the Philippines. However, Texas summers are hot but it was OK because we have air-conditioning. But my thinking is that if a German Shepherd and a Siberian Husky’s can tolerate the climate a Leonberger should too.
