My name is Thomas Wikman. I am a software/robotics engineer with a background in physics. I am currently retired. I took early retirement. I am a dog lover, and especially a Leonberger lover, a home brewer, craft beer enthusiast, I’m learning French, and I am an avid reader. I live in Dallas, Texas, but I am originally from Sweden. I am married to Claudia, and we have three children. I have two blogs. The first feature the crazy adventures of our Leonberger Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle as well as information on Leonbergers. The second blog, superfactful, feature information and facts I think are very interesting. With this blog I would like to create a list of facts that are accepted as true among the experts of the field and yet disputed amongst the public or highly surprising. These facts are special and in lieu of a better word I call them super-facts.

    1. Thank you so much Laura. According to legend, well according to Heinrich Essig, they got Saint Bernard (50%), Newfoundland (25%), and Great Pyrenee or Pyrenean Mountain Dog(25%) (it is not clear which) in them. But some think there is German Farm dog or German Shepherd in there as well. Whatever the origin is (back in the early 19th century), they are very much calm family dogs, more so than the Saint Bernard. Here is a link about their origin.

  1. What adorable little fluff balls, Thomas. They are the cutest puppies. And cool to see them slimming out as they grow up. The photo with the chihuahua cracked me up. And the Christmas photo is a heart-melter. Thanks for all the smiles this morning.

    1. Thank you so much Diane. I also think the Leonberger puppy with the chihuahua is funny. They do slim out as they grow from 4-5 months old until one year old, but then they start filling up again and they get a large chest. They aren’t done growing until they are two years old.

        1. Yes you are right. Our Bronco was really slim at the age of 10-12 months and we started thinking that maybe something was wrong with him, but then his chest grew, he became muscular as well as fatter, stockier, and then he looked like an adult Leonberger.

    1. Thank you so much Pooja. They certainly grow a lot fast. From 4-5 months until one year old they get large, get long legs, but they are still slim and gangly, and then between one year to two years old they fill up and they get a big chest. Kind of like humans I guess.

        1. You are right, their size can be intimidating. One time a teenage girl entered the dog park and Bronco, thinking he was the welcome committee, ran to greet her and stood up and put his paws on her shoulders to lick her face and she got so scared she was crying. I was not quick enough to stop him. But he only wanted to say hello. He loved it when strangers petted him. He was begging for it. Rollo on the other hand is quite different. If he doesn’t know you, don’t touch him.

        2. I think you are right Pooja. Sometimes it is because the owners know that it is more important that a big dog is friendly. It could lead to disaster otherwise. But I also think many giant breeds such as Leonbergers and Newfoundland dogs are inherently non-aggressive. One exception was our pug Daisy who was very calm and friendly despite being a small dog. Well our Rollo made up for that by being the opposite.

  2. Thomas, I loved the puppy photos! 💕

This post brought back fond memories of all the wonderful dogs who were in my life. When I was about ten, our Weimaraner, Lady, had ten puppies. I especially loved the photo of the mother and ten puppies. We used to dress our puppies up in doll clothes. 😄

        1. Yes, our Bronco certainly loved the cold days in winter. They don’t like the summer heat in Texas though, but luckily they are also somewhat indoor dogs despite being so big. They like staying with people inside, at least if you have a roomy house. They need to go out sometimes. They need exercise like all big dogs but you can take them at the right time and there are ways to keep the cool.
