What Does Rollo See Out His Window

Our mini-Australian Shepherd Rollo loves going out, whether it is for a walk, a car ride, or visiting grandma and grandpa. But we can’t take him everywhere. Sometimes we have to leave him at home and when this happens, we tell him “Rollo go and look out the window”, and he runs to the window, and he looks out. You may wonder, what does Rollo see when he looks out his window?

He sees the blue sky and the clouds; he sees birds flying and he sees the black crows walking on our lawn. He doesn’t like the black crows walking on our lawn, so he goes woof, woof, woof, woof.

He sees the green grass, the houses, he sees the jagged edges of the roofs and the chimneys, and he sees workers repairing shingles on roof tops, which look scary, so he goes woof, woof, woof, woof.

He sees rabbits running, cats hiding, children playing and laughing, and he sees squirrels running up the trees so he goes woof, woof, woof, woof.

He sees people walking by our house. Do they see him? Maybe not. But there, someone sees him, and he goes woof, woof, woof, woof.

He sees people with dogs walking by our house and that makes him mad, so he goes woof, woof, woof, woof.

Rollo looks out the window and he sees the world, and he knows that the world was made for him, but he has to stay inside, so he goes woof, woof, woof, woof.

We left him alone in his despair for nearly two hours but now he sees us coming home and he runs to the door, and he goes woof, woof, woof, woof.

We ask him, Rollo, what did you see out your window today? And he goes woof, woof, woof, woof.

Daisy and Rollo Looking Out the Window

Rollo grew up with two dogs, our big fluffy Leonberger dog Bronco and Daisy our Pug. Bronco sometimes stood and looked out the window, but Rollo and Daisy loved doing that together. They stood on the sofa and barked at everything they saw outside.

Finally, I just wanted to point out that Rollo is named after the Viking king who tried to sack Paris, not the Rolo candy.

    Java Bean: “Ayyy, our Dada likes that Rolo candy! Sometimes it is in the bags he buys for Halloween! Usually he puts the leftover Halloween candy in the freezer to crush and put in ice cream for the next six months, but apparently that doesn’t work with Rolo, so he has to just eat it.”

  15. What a fun post! It helps us imagine things from a dog’s point of view and what they might be thinking. I always give Marley a treat when we have to leave him alone. If it’s going to be a long time, he gets a KONG filled with yummy soft food. Rollo is a smart little guy.

    1. Thank you so much JoAnne. It is so nice that you giving Marley a KONG with yummy soft food when you leave him. Unfortuntaly, we can’t do that with Rollo because we need to watch his weight. But maybe after he lost a couple of pounds (he just needs to lose 2-3 pounds).

      1. When I know I’m going to give Marley a Kong, I give him a little less breakfast. Sometimes, he doesn’t eat his breakfast, (at almost 10, he may be feeling his age some mornings) and I mix half of his breakfast with canned food in his Kong and give him the other half at dinner.

        1. That is very smart. Our Rollo is six years old and still very food motivated. He’ll eat anything he’ll come across and he wants a share of everyone’s food. We have started to count calories and we have to be careful.

  16. Such a fun post, and your star, Rollo, is so adorable! 💖 Love the “Knock Knock” joke and the picture with Daisy. as well 😃 I agree with Jacquie about the children’s book. They would love it!

    When Zoey looks out the front window, we say she is watching TV. She used to bark a lot too, but now we say “no talking”, and she’s quiet. Of course, when we’re not there, she probably sounds off to her heart’s content. Mostly, she goes and sleeps on the bed, though, waiting for us to come back. There’s a TV in there, which we turn on for her, so she won’t feel too alone.

    1. Thank you so much Debbie. Maybe we should consider yours and Jacqui’s suggestion, my wife and I and our daughter. Turning on the TV for Zoey is a good idea. I’ve read that noises and human voices help them feel better. Barbara above also suggested that them looking out a window is like watching TV for them. Something to hold their attention.

A lovely post Thomas… your dogs are adorable… I always wondered how Sam would be waiting at our front door when I came home as we were set quite a bit back from the road… but my husband watched him one day and he leapt off the sofa about 1 minute before I arrived… he heard my car and despite others using the lane he recognised mine. They are so smart and I do miss having a dog, but the cat is doing his best to make up for it… xx

    1. Thank you Sally. That is a beautiful story. Sam recognizing the car is amazing, but at the same time, it seems like dogs are quite often capable of doing that. However, I’ve realized that you can’t make it too hard for them. In a parking lot with many cars, Rollo walks up to cars looking similar to ours. He picks the right door though, but not always the right car. On the other hand, I have a hard time with that myself.I am glad I can read license plates. Cars are much less colorful today than they used to be. There’s been a major decline in non-grayscale colors over the last 20 years according to Google AI.

      1. I get that Thomas. The worst time for me was the day after we arrived in Texas, my husband went to his new office and had to go to the Greenspoint Mall with our rented car… I went in one door and could not for the life of me remember which one to leave by… and whilst I had the reg number of the rental car it was a make I was unfamiliar with and there seemed to many cars the same colour… I had to walk around the outside of the Mall for about an hour before I finally found it…I wish I had Rollo with me I would have had half a chance lol. xx

        1. An hour is a long walk just to find a car, but something similar happened to me. It is a lot harder when every car is white, black, gray, and silver. I’ve learned my lesson and I take a photo and note where I parked. About the Greenspoint Mall, like so many other malls it has been closed and will be turned into an apartment complex.

            1. It closed in 2024. I think you are right. Online shopping is big factor that has closed many malls. However, some have survived. Northpark Mall close to our house has survived because they focused on more than just shopping. They’ve added a lot of art, fun things for children, piano players in the hallways, upscale restaurants (not just a food court), and are making it into a shopping experience you can’t get online.

                1. Yes that is a good point. I feel the same way. Doing everything online becomes old after a while. Also, when the mall can provide something that online shopping can’t, it will stay relevant. North Park mall has really done a good job mixing the stores with an art museum and entertainment and good food, and it is worth going even if you are not shopping.
