Our Leonberger Bronco (Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle) grew up with several dogs, one of them being our Pug Daisy, which we still have. Bronco and Daisy were good friends and on one occasion Bronco saved Daisy from an attacking lose German Shepherd. We’ve owned a very well-behaved German Shepherd, they are good dogs, but this particular one wasn’t.
Bronco stepped in between the German Shepherd and Daisy and got bitten in the leg in the process. Leonbergers are about double as strong as German Shepherds and almost double as massive and they have more powerful jaws. However, Bronco was old and had just had surgery in the leg in which he was bit, so it was certainly a sacrifice on his part. I was mad and I ran after the German Shepherd and tried kicking him and between mine and Bronco’s efforts he ran off. I cursed at the owner of the German Shepherd for letting him run lose in a public space. Maybe I shouldn’t have, but in the end Daisy our innocent sweet Pug was alive. What a day that was. Anyway, in this post I am showing a few photos I took of Bronco and Daisy.

Finally, I also would like to highlight the Dawn of Humanity series written by Jacqui Murray once again. I loved this series and I highly recommend it. Below I am posting some information about the Dawn of Humanity series.

The Dawn of Humanity series is so interesting. Daisy looks like a small toy next to Bronco! It’s wonderful that he was so good with her.

Yes he really loved her. Once when he stole a take-out dinner he carried the baked potato over to her and dropped it in front of her. He loved all his dog friends.

Bronco was such a brave friend! Did the owner of that German shepherd pay the vet bills for Bronco (or even apologize)?

Yes you are right. We did not take Bronco to the vet for that incidence since he was going for a checkup pretty soon after anyways. He just got hurt a bit but there was no additional sore. However, it was not what he needed as he was still healing from surgery. We did not ask about a vet bill. She did apologize but at the time I was so mad that I did not accept her apology. I called her dog “Cujo” from that horror movie.

Lovely stories. I know I’ve said this before, but sometimes I wonder if people deserve dogs.

Denise I think your are right. We don’t deserve them but we have them.

That is too much sweet cuteness! I don’t understand if people love their animal children, how they can let them run loose. Bronco is so loving. Daisy’s toungue… awww. It isn’t fair to lose our loved ones, animals, humans, sometimes beloved plants & trees too (for some). I’m glad Bronco wasn’t awfully hurt, but the timing was awful for that poor leg. Things were rotten between old neighbors & us regarding their dog. So ongoing was this otherwise rather civil battle, that one day my husband scooped all their dog’s poo from our yard with a shovel…
And dumped it on their porch. We had had it with our, our family, a lawn person, everyone but them stepping in their own dog’s business.

Yes you are right. As a dog owner you need to be responsible. It is against the law to let your dog be unleashed in public spaces and you have to pick up all the waste. I would never think about doing it any other way. I am so sorry to hear that your neighbor is irresponsible. I hope it will get resolved. Also thank you for your very kind words.

Thank you. They were nice, we just had neighborly issues. They moved, and we moved.
And, you are welcome.

And yes Daisy tend to have her tongue out a lot. For her every day is tongue out Tuesday. It is just the way she is. She is probably the most easy going dog we’ve ever had. Everybody loves her.

I am happy it worked out in the end. As for us, I am still referring to that German Shepherd with the moniker Cujo.

Came by to thank you for your recent decision to follow Learning from Dogs. That is much appreciated. Plus one of our dogs is a large animal, about 150 lbs, and we call him Brandy. Brandy is half Mastiff and half Pyrenean.

Thank you so much Paul! I am so glad I found your blog. I’ve been looking for good dog blogs to follow.
150lbs that’s big. Our Leonberger was 167lbs at one point but he was overweight so the day he weighed in at that (at the veterinary) we put him on a diet. He was not happy. His healthy weight was 135-140 pounds.
