Today Is Daisys Birthday

Today is Daisy’s fifteenth birthday. She is indeed a little old lady. She spent her first 12 years with her big brother, our Leonberger Bronco. Bronco saved her life one time, when a very aggressive lose German Shepherd attacked us and went after Daisy. Bronco stepped in between and saved her life. She also grew up with a Labrador, Baylor, a German Shepherd, Baby, a Japanese Chin, Ryu, and now Rollo our mini-Australian Shepherd. Everyone loved her and wanted to protect her. We no longer have Bronco, but we still have Daisy and Rollo.

Today we visited my wife Claudia’s parents where we celebrated Daisy’s birthday. We sang Happy Birthday to Daisy. The picture below has a story to it. We were celebrating Daisy’s 13th birthday and we had visitors from Los Angeles who came with their dog Oslo. Unfortunately, Rollo had not been socialized well when he was little (our fault) so he does not like dogs he does not know. Oslo came over to me and I made the mistake of petting him, which prompted Rollo to attack Oslo. We handled the situation, but it was an unpleasant surprise. I guess in his mind, I committed petimony. “You shall not pet any other dogs but me, well Daisy is OK”. We tried telling Rollo to behave but Oslo was obviously afraid of Rollo. Later, when the dogs were sitting around the table eating their pupcakes, Rollo was growling at Oslo who just looked away.

    1. You mean the her 13th birtrhday photo? It wasn’t too hard back then, except Rollo kept growling at Oslo. We just put them on the chairs. Now with Daisy being old and frail we are afraid that she falls, so we held them. We held Rollo too even though that might not have been necessary. Thank you Mary Ann.

  21. Happy Belated Birthday to Daisy! The photos are all adorable. 😍 Our rescue dog doesn’t like every dog she meets either and gets possessive with food, although she’s improving with age. Hopefully, Rollo will mellow as well. I love that you give them pupcakes and hotdogs! Such a fun way to celebrate. 😀

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words Debbie. Yes our Rollo’s breed (mini-Australian Shepherd) tend to be both anxious and domineering so it is important that they are socialized well and we did not do a good job with that. We got lazy and it was also the pandemic. But our Leonberger Bronco, as well as our Pug Daisy, was a lot easier in this regard. They both had/have much softer and friendlier personalities from the start. But we love Rollo more than anything. He is also a lot of fun.

      1. Our Zoey sounds similar to your Rollo and we feel the same way about her. 🙂 She’s part lab, part Kentucky mountain dog (we think) and was rescued as a stray there. No back history, but she has a large scar on her throat. We adopted her during the pandemic also, when she was almost a year old. She too is extremely lovable, most of the time. I can imagine how much fun you have with your furkids! 😀

    2. Yes we have a lot of fun with our furkids. It is great that you rescued Zoey. We need more of that. Two our dogs were rescues but most of them not. Unfortunately, we bought three of them from puppy mills without knowing it. They were great dogs but puppy mills are terrible for the dogs. A trainer told us that Rollo is from a puppy mill. We thought it was a reputable breeder. That’s one good thing with the Leonberger Club of America. They keep track of that. It is almost impossible to get a Leonberger from somewhere else but two places, a reputable breeder or a rescue organization. I should say LCA keep track of owner information too. An owner that mistreats their Leonberger, or sell them in an unauthorized way, is not likely to be able to buy a Leonberger again from anywhere. It’s an amazing system.

  22. Such a fun post. Happy Birthday to Daisy. I couldn’t help laughing at Daisy’s “exhausting day doing nothing.” And the gingerbread house. I can imagine the caption: “What gingerbread house? There’s no gingerbread house.” Thanks for sharing the fun through the years. 🙂

  23. Happy Birthday, Daisy! What a loyal and loving family! I love the photo of Daisy, Bronco, and the gingerbread remnants with Bronco looking innocent. We used to have a walker coonhound who would steal food from the countertop. I wonder if Rollo felt protective as well as jealous. Walking him and the new dog in the same direction away from the house might help. My neighbor has a very reactive setter who barks at other dogs in a way that seems aggressive. We’ve walked her dog, Monty and my Marley together by staying parallel, starting with some distance and gradually moving closer as the dogs independently sniff the smells along the sidewalk. It seems to work well, though we have to start over when they haven’t seen each other in a while. Best wishes!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words JoAnna. Yes Bronco was an expert counter surfer. He could reach anything we could reach and open levers and cupcoards that did not have round knobs.That gate in the background was closed until Bronco lifted the lever up with his nose. Someone had not locked it. What you are saying sounds like a great idea. We’ll try that next time Oslo comes to visit. Rollo has to learn to get along with other dogs so he can have play friends. Daisy is getting very old and has medical issues. One day he will be alone.

    2. Yes Bronco had some practice with levers on various gates. At the dog bark, at a moment when I wasn’t watching him, he lifted the lever on the gate to the dog park and ran out. Someone screamed “look, that dog is letting all the dogs out”..and the chase was on. Yes I hope Rollo settles down. We have to work on it.
