Happy New Year from Our Dogs

With this post I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy New Year and remind everyone that Fireworks is not appreciated by many dogs. Our Leonberger Bronco did not mind fireworks. Our Labrador Baylor did not mind fireworks and our Pug Daisy does not seem to mind either. However, our Japanese Shin Ryu was terrified of fireworks and so was our German Shepherd Baby. Our mini–Australian Shepherd Rollo is more than terrified of fireworks, and he was traumatized by a rouge bottle rocket that was launched in the middle of the neighborhood against the rules. Kids having fun can do a lot of damage to a puppy.

My name is Thomas Wikman. I am a software/robotics engineer with a background in physics. I am currently retired. I took early retirement. I am a dog lover, and especially a Leonberger lover, a home brewer, craft beer enthusiast, I’m learning French, and I am an avid reader. I live in Dallas, Texas, but I am originally from Sweden. I am married to Claudia, and we have three children. I have two blogs. The first feature the crazy adventures of our Leonberger Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle as well as information on Leonbergers. The second blog, superfactful, feature information and facts I think are very interesting. With this blog I would like to create a list of facts that are accepted as true among the experts of the field and yet disputed amongst the public or highly surprising. These facts are special and in lieu of a better word I call them super-facts.

  1. What a wonderful post!!! You know how much I adore pics of your precious dogs. Happy New Year to you too, dear friend!! And yes, I agree. Fireworks are bad news for dogs and cats. All of my cats are terrified of fireworks. They usually dive under furniture when the racket starts. Although I had one senior cat who was so afraid she would lose her bladder on the sofa. What a mess!! Working in rescue for decades, I know the next few days are going particularly hard for record numbers of dogs escaping their fences, yards, and homes. My wish is always that one day fireworks will be outlawed for personal use. They just cause too much trouble for humans and pets.

    1. Yes sometime fireworks can be awful to cats and dogs. Our Rollo is forever traumatized by a large rocket, the type that is not allowed, that went astray and exploded close to us in the middle of the neighborhood as I was out walking him. It was a large explosion and he ran all the way home. Anyway, I wish you a Happy New Year and a great 2023

      1. Oh no!!! Poor Rollo. That’s terrible! It’s bad enough to be inside when fireworks are going on. But to be outside when a bottle rock goes astray and lands close by had to be a nightmare for him. Well, I hope your pups will be okay tonight and tomorrow night. It’s almost 6:00pm and I just heard the first explosion. Good thing I already fed the cats their dinner. I probably won’t see them the rest of the night. lol!! Wishing you a blessed New Years and 2024 too, dear friend!! I consider meeting you on WordPress and now on Facebook one of the blessings of 2023. 💗

    2. Thank you so much chihuahuagirl3. Yes Rollo did not need that. It seems like you are one our ahead of us. I am going to start the grill soon. Sofar no fireworks here. I also wanted to mention that it is so great that you worked in rescue. Such an important job.

  2. Thomas, wishing you, your family and dogs a very Happy New Year! 🥳 I always made sure to keep my two cats indoors during this time and in the U.K. nearly worse is Guy’s Fawkes Night with fireworks galore for nearly a week!

    1. Yes a few people reminded me about the cats too, and elderly people. Fireworks is something to be careful with. It sounds like you have a good plan. I wish you and your family, pets and humans, a Happy New Year and a great 2024 🎉🍻🥂🐕🐕‍🦺

  4. Such beautiful dogs! Thanks for the timely reminder that many are upset by fireworks. I wish they could be regulated better and confined to specific public locations only. Happy New Year, Thomas! Gott nytt år! 🥂🍾

    1. Thank you so much Debbie. Yes the worst ones are the ones who shoot them in their backyard into their neighbors yards or into the street. People might have dogs in their backyard or they are walking them on the street (that happened to us). Anyway, I wish you and your loved ones a Happy New Year och Gott Nytt År 🎉🥂🍻🐶🐕‍🦺🐕

  5. If it was officially organized fireworks show only, neither my cats and I would actually mind them. My eldest sits by the window to watch, she’s brave and curious. But it’s all the firecrackers and all the other (otherwise illegal) pyrotechnics that people throw around that scares the cats – and many other pets and small children, people with PTSD etc. It’s wild. So glad to hear your dogs don’t mind fireworks. Have a peaceful and safe new Year’s… And a fulfilling 2024.

    1. Yes I agree with you. I should say that our Rollo is terrified of fireworks but Daisy is not. Rollo got PTSD from a misfired illegal (and large) rocket that hit nearby us while I was walking him. Anyway, I wish you and your loved ones a very Happy New Year 🎉🥂🍻🐶🐕‍🦺🐕

  6. Our Lulu doesn’t like fireworks (or thunder, or the base booming, or high wind noises, or …) either, but Bean the former street dog is unfazed by any noises he hears outside. The cats, of course, couldn’t care less about anything. Happy New Year!

    1. That is interesting. I don’t have cats but I know people with cats who are scared of the fireworks. I wonder if Bean got used to all the noises outside. Anyway, Happy New Year to you and your dogs and cats and the rest of the family.

    1. After seeing what a misfired rocket did to Rollo, I hate them too. They bother a lot of people and dogs and therefore we need to be careful with them. Mischievous and unnecessary firing off fireworks is not cool.
