Photos of Leonberger Puppies

This post features ten Leonberger photos. First there are two photos of our Leonberger Bronco from when he was three months old. Then there are three shutter stock photos of Leonberger puppies, who are probably about two months old. We did not take many photos of Bronco when he was a little puppy so that’s why I am including three puppy photos from shutter stock. Then there are five photos of our Leonberger Bronco between the ages 4-5 months to around one year old. He is bigger in those photos but still not an adult.

Two sand colored Leonberger puppies playing in the snow. The play seems to be a little bit rough. Like all Leonbergers they have a black facemask.

Our German Shepherd Baby is playing with young Bronco. Bronco is perhaps 4-5 months old in this photo. He is getting bigger, but he has not yet filled out and does not have a lot of fur.
Bronco our Leonberger is lying on his back. His head is tilted backwards, tongue out, he is asleep.
Bronco less than one years old. He is a Leonberger teenager. He fell asleep on the floor.
In the foreground a gangly looking Leonberger in the dog park. There are two dogs in the background, a white lab and a yellow lab. The yellow lab is our Baylor.
Young Bronco at the dog park. Our Labrador Baylor is in the background. Bronco does not yet look like an adult Leonberger. He will fill out and get more hair.
Bronco, our Leonberger is standing on our red sofa. He is leaning forward giving me a kiss.
Bronco is still young, but he is getting close to being an adult. In the photo he just gave me a kiss and he loved to dance on his back legs.
Photo shows our Leonberger Bronco standing by the kitchen gate. He is wearing a pilgrim hat with a large brim. Our kids put the hat on his head. Our oldest son is standing in the background.
Bronco, our Leonberger, is young but not yet an adult, which we can see from his swanky back. Leonberger sometimes have a swanky back before they are done growing. We had a gate to the kitchen to prevent Bronco from raiding the kitchen. The gate lever had a lock on it because he knew how to lift levers with his nose and open gate doors. The hat he is wearing is a pilgrim hat, the kind of hats the pilgrims wore. Well at least that’s what the pilgrims looked like in our children’s books.

I am a dog lover, and especially a Leonberger lover, a home brewer, craft beer enthusiast, I’m learning French, and I am an avid reader. I live in Dallas, Texas, but I am originally from Sweden. I am married to Claudia, and we have three children. I have two blogs. The first feature the crazy adventures of our Leonberger Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle as well as information on Leonbergers. The second blog, superfactful, feature information and facts I think are very interesting. With this blog I would like to create a list of facts that are accepted as true among the experts of the field and yet disputed amongst the public or highly surprising. These facts are special and in lieu of a better word I call them super-facts.

  1. What an adorable puppy he was!!! And I had no idea they had to grow into all their fur. If you hadn’t told me this was Bronco at several months up to that first year I never would have known. His fur was so short and sleek then. Especially the pic of him sleeping on his back. So slim and trim. How fascinating!!

    1. Thank you so much Reply to chihuahuagirl3. In the beginning we started wondering, is he really a Leonberger? Then after a couple of years he looked like a Leonberger with a big wide chest, thicker body, lots of chest hair, and the tail haning down most of the time instead of going all over the place. But I read that the two first years they may look different like a gangly teenager. Then at one point he was shaved by a groomer. He was almost naked. That was due to a misunderstanding with the groomer. My wife was furious.

  2. Bronco was such a beautiful puppy and teenager, too. 😀 I love all the photos you posted. There is such a brightness in the eyes. I love dogs, and now, because of your blog, I really adore Leonbergers.

    1. Yes at that point we started worrying that something was wrong, but then the front legs grew and the body and especially chest filled out and he looked more like he should. But apparently that is pretty common. If you think about it, many teenage humans don’t really look human either. One of the major reasons we are holding off getting another Leonberger is that Rollo’s behavior towards other dogs is worrysome. He is very hostile to dogs he does not know even to Daisy sometimes, when he thinks she is trying to take spot he has, and he refuses to share toys with her. We would be worried about the Leonberger puppy at first, and then later on Rollo, in the event he picks a fight with a big Leonberger dog. He attacked the neighbors Bernadoodle, which is pretty dumb since a Bernadoodle is much bigger. Luckily he was fine, but we have to fix his behavior, or he will never have any dog friends.

    2. Yes Rollo was very annoying to Bronco, yanked his tail, stole his toys, jumped on him, but Bronco was very tolerant and Rollo grew up with Bronco. Rollo has now become even worse, even more annoying and aggressive, and we are afraid how the chemistry will work if we bring in another dog. It is a real dilemma, but we caused it ourselves by not being more vigilant in training Rollo. On the other hand Rollo’s personality was difficult from the start.

  3. Puppies! LOL Thomas, I am starting to have sympathy for people who steal your photos and post them. Kidding, of course, but it isn’t hard o imagine that maybe they just want to be able to easily return to these faces when they need a smile! Thank you for sharing.

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words Stacey. We did not take enough photos. From when Bronco was a little puppy (3 months and younger) all we have are the first two photos. Well we have a few more but they are fuzzy and not worth posting.

  4. How funny!!!! I can only imagine what he looked like shaved. I’ll bet he looked like a completely different dog!! Did your wife think when she first saw him that the groomer was giving her someone else’s dog by mistake? lol

      1. I can imagine!! Too bad there wasn’t a third party there with calming energy to soothe all the ruffled feathers and emotional stress. Hopefully Bronco wasn’t too upset seeing your wife so upset.

    1. His fur grew back but it took several months and when it was still very short we could not take him outside during the day for the fear of sunburns. They are double coated so the coat is important to swimming, sun protection, cooling off, and for showing. If he had been a show dog, a lot of Leonbergers are show dogs, his career would have been over. Unlike most breeds you are not allowed to trim a Leonberger’s hair. That is an instant disqualification and the judges would have seen that he had been shaved, even years later. Therefore, it was not a trivial matter. But really, for us, in the long run it was maybe not a big deal.

      1. That is amazing about his fur. I had no idea. I know you have to be careful with white cats and white dogs in that their ears can sunburn easily. But it never occurred to me a dog his coloring and size (even if he’s shaved) could sunburn. How interesting! Could you have put a tshirt on him or something like that to protect him from the sun?

    2. I don’t know about T-shirt, perhaps we could have tried that, but we just walked him in the evening. However, there’s a lot of other issues in addition to the risk of sunburn for a few months. Getting shaved is not a good thing for a Leonberger, or St. Bernard, or Newfie, something the groomer should have known.
