Leonberger information and amusing and heartwarming Leonberger stories.
Today Is Rollos Eight Birthday
Today is our mini-Australian Shepherd Rollo’s eight birthday. Rollo grew up with his big brother the Leonberger Bronco and his sister Daisy the Pug. Now a day he is an only dog. We celebrated his birthday today by singing Happy Birthday and he ate a hot dog.

My name is Thomas Wikman. I am a software/robotics engineer with a background in physics. I am currently retired. I took early retirement. I am a dog lover, and especially a Leonberger lover, a home brewer, craft beer enthusiast, I’m learning French, and I am an avid reader. I live in Dallas, Texas, but I am originally from Sweden. I am married to Claudia, and we have three children. I have two blogs. The first feature the crazy adventures of our Leonberger Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle as well as information on Leonbergers. The second blog, superfactful, feature information and facts I think are very interesting. With this blog I would like to create a list of facts that are accepted as true among the experts of the field and yet disputed amongst the public or highly surprising. These facts are special and in lieu of a better word I call them super-facts.

I always wondered how people managed to get these shots. My dogs used to rip off any kind of hat I tried to put on them. Rollo is a beautiful animal.
Ha ha Rollo takes off his hat after three seconds so you’ve got to be quick with the camera. However, our Pug Daisy was different. She let the hat stay on. Our Leonberger Bronco was somewhere in between. Thank you so much Pete.
Thank you so much Melie. Yes he enjoyed his day, the hot dog and the singing, but not the hat. However, it was only on his head a very short time for the photos.
Happy Happy Birthday, Rollo, from your friends Dot and Lia in Spain!! Rollo was such a cute puppy and is a real sweetheart now. I love the hot dog as a birthday cake. I may borrow that idea.
Thank you so much Darlene and Dot and Lia. That is a long distance greeting. Normally we would buy him a pupcake, but the pupcake store closed. I don’t know why. Maybe they did not have enough business. However, a hot dog with candles worked as well.
Thank you so much Sara. Yes he loved his little birthday cake / hot dog. We used to buy pupcakes but the pupcake store closed. They may not have gotten enough customers.
Yes the hot dog was good too but I wish the pupcake store still existed. He loved the pupcakes. It was a cute little store that looked an old time pastry store and it had pupcakes and pastries for dogs. But it didn’t last.
Thank you so much Pooja. Yes we will certainly give him lots of pats from you. He was not entirely good today though. He rushed/attacked towards a labrador on the evening walk and the labrador got really scared even though Rollo is much smaller. He has a problem with other dogs. He thinks he is the king of the neighborhood and that other dogs should obey him.
He might get in trouble one day. I hope not but he got lose once and attacked, well aggressively barked, at a bernadoodle, a big dog. Luckily the Bernadoodle was well behaved.
Yes I wish he was more humble. Bronco our Leonberger dog was patient and tolerant, but that was just Bronco. Well, once when Rollo stole Bronco’s toy right from in front of Bronco’s nose, he did get back
I don’t know if this is the case for all dogs but I’ve noticed larger dogs like Bronco tend to be a bit more even tempered while small dogs are often more naughty.
It is a good observation. That is quite often the case. Daisy, our Pug was calm for a small dog but small dogs tend to get more anxious and stressed out more easily and behave accordingly. It is also more important that you train your big dog better so people do. I should say Leonberger dogs tend to be more calm by nature also. There are some big dogs that are not so calm and nice by nature.
That makes sense, small dogs are probably more easily threatened and feel the need to be territorial. Leonbergers do seem more calm and friendly. At least Bronco definitely did.
Thank you so much Barbara. Yes he was not very patient with the hat, but who would? I would have removed it too. But he waited patiently for the hot dog.
Seeing those throwback puppy photos alongside his big brother Bronco just melts the heart. Rollo wearing his party hat (before immediately swatting it off) is pure perfection. Isn’t he cute? 😍
Thank you so much Outrageous Monk. Yes Rollo loved Bronco and Bronco was very patient with Rollo as he climbed all over him, bit his tail, and swung in his tail, and sat on his back. We tried to keep Rollo from bothering Bronco but it was not always possible without putting him in his playpen, which we referred to as baby jail. Yes he did not like the hat, but we were able to get a few photos of him with it on. It is funny, our Pug Daisy did not mind the part hats. She could wear it all day long. No problem. But Rollo, it comes off in three seconds.
Oh by the way, he is a herding dog, a sheep herding dog, so we are not really humans, we are his sheep. He decides everything. I know that’s not really good, but it is very difficult to avoid.

It looks like you had a wonderful day, even if the party hat wasn’t quite to your taste! 😂

Maybe he was being extra naughty because he knew it was his birthday and he could get away with it haha.

Oh no, yeah it can cause unnecessary trouble especially if he gets into a fight with an aggressive dog.

“Baby jail” is the ultimate puppy survival tactic! Sounds like Bronco was an absolute saint of an older brother.
