This blog feature amusing and heartwarming stories about our late Leonberger dog Bronco, as well as other Leonbergers. It also has a lot of information about the Leonberger breed, the history, care, training, Leonberger organizations, etc. I also wrote a Leonberger book, which I am featuring in the sidebar.
Rollo Six Years Old
Rollo our mini-Australian Shepherd turned six years old on October 12, 2024. However, we were at a wedding in Chicago, so we had to miss his birthday. We celebrated when we came home. In the past we’ve put a funny birthday hat on him. Unfortunately, he hates hats so this time I took pictures without a hat. To celebrate Rollo’s birthday, I am posting 20 photos I took of Rollo through the years, including some with our late Leonberger Bronco. If you’ve been following my blog, you will have seen many of these photos already but not all of them, certainly not the ones I just took.

It wasn’t really a walk. More like carrying him around the neighborhood.Rollo peeking out behind the sofa.Rollo playing with a volleyball.Rollo rolling a soccer ball.Rollo frequently bit our Leonberger Bronco’s tail, and he even swung in it like a swing. He climbed all over Bronco. Bronco was very patient with him. When Rollo was young, he loved chewing shoes. Here the artist is posing with his art. When we left the house we put Rollo in his baby jail for his own protection. We were afraid he would bother Bronco so much that Bronco lost his patience. Rollo ended up loving his baby jail. It was his own special house and no one else was allowed in.When Bronco had a toe amputation and we had to change his bandage every day, Rollo helped out. My name is Thomas Wikman. I am a software/robotics engineer with a background in physics. I am currently retired. I took early retirement. I am a dog lover, and especially a Leonberger lover, a home brewer, craft beer enthusiast, I’m learning French, and I am an avid reader. I live in Dallas, Texas, but I am originally from Sweden. I am married to Claudia, and we have three children. I have two blogs. The first feature the crazy adventures of our Leonberger Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle as well as information on Leonbergers. The second blog, superfactful, feature information and facts I think are very interesting. With this blog I would like to create a list of facts that are accepted as true among the experts of the field and yet disputed amongst the public or highly surprising. These facts are special and in lieu of a better word I call them super-facts.

Rollo seems like such a sweetie! Too bad he doesn’t enjoy wearing hats, he looks absolutely adorable with one. And pupcakes are a great idea — the dogs can feel involved, even if they’re not allowed to eat real cupcakes!
As soon as you put a hat on him he knocks it off with his paw. But that’s life. You are right, the pupcakes are a great idea. The interesting is that people can eat them too but they are best for dogs.
Happy 6th birthday to Rollo! Such an adorable collection of photos—he’s grown so much over the years. Each picture captures his playful spirit perfectly!
How funny!!! That’s a puppy for you…adorable yet challenging. And he still is in some ways, isn’t he? I can relate. I have 2 special needs cats. And one other that’s always in trouble. I’ve definitely got my hands full. 🤣 But we love them anyway, don’t we? They are our babies. 🩷
Thank you so much Denise. He looks innocent but oh boy, he is a challenging energetic and anxious little dog. But all those feelings make it easy to relate.
Thank you so much John. Daisy and Rollo were funny together. Standing on the sofa and barking at everyone passing in front of the house. Now he is alone.
Yes you are right John. On the other hand, it is his own hostility towards any other dogs that he does not know that is causing the problem. It would not be wise to bring in another dog to the house right now.
Thank you so much Diane. He ate a lot of shoes. My wife got really mad one time when he ate her new high heeled shoes. Once when he was carrying around my shoe and I met him in the hallway, he stopped and stared and me for a couple of seconds. Then he turned around and tiptoed back to where I had left my shoes. He put it back next to my other shoe, turned to correct way. Then he tiptoed off. He knew exactly what to do, perfectly.
Thank you so much Gwen. With that photo I think I capturing him in the right moment. He knew he was not supposed to chew shoes and and I caught him in the act. For a while we had to place all our shoes high up, or we would lose them.
So sorry to have missed the celebration! It looks like Rollo enjoyed his birthday, especially since you decided against the hat. 😆 He was such an adorable little puppy! 😍 The size difference between Bronco and Rollo reminds me of the movie, “Twins”, where Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito played brothers. 😀
Thank you so much Debbie. He currently has a cone of shame of because he extracted a tooth yesterday. He hates it as much as he hates hats, but he has no choice about this one. I remember that movie. It was funny and very entertaining.
Omg the final photo is the cutest. 👌😂

Thank you Sara. They were funny together. Now Rollo is alone and he dislikes other dogs too much for us to bring another into the house.

Yes he is a number. A lot of personality, a lot of emotion, a lot of energy, and yes still a difficult dog, but we love him immensely.

What a lovely album. Rollo always looks so innocent, whether he’s posing over the destroyed shoe or attacking Bronco’s tail. He is adorable,
