This blog feature amusing and heartwarming stories about our late Leonberger dog Bronco, as well as other Leonbergers. It also has a lot of information about the Leonberger breed, the history, care, training, Leonberger organizations, etc. I also wrote a Leonberger book, which I am featuring in the sidebar.
Leonberger Guiness World Record
With this post I just wanted to highlight a fun Leonberger YouTube video regarding a Leonberger who succeeded in creating a new Guiness World Record on the Britain Got Talent show. If you don’t know what a Leonberger is; it is a big fluffy, fun and friendly family dog originating in Germany. It was registered as a new breed in 1846 in the town of Leonberger by a prominent businessman named Heinrich Essig. Leonbergers are related to Saint Bernards, Newfoundland Dogs, and allegedly Great Pyrenees (or Pyrenean mastiffs). You can read about the history of the Leonberger here. I am sorry I realized now that the page is full of typos. I have to fix that at some point.
At the end of this page, I put a fun YouTube video of Leonberger named Hagrid who created a new Guiness World Record. Since I created my Leonberger history page when I had just launched this blog in 2022 and had very few followers many people may have missed the Hagrid movie, so here it is. I can add that I have also added some photos of our late Leonberger Bronco at the end of this post.

He is sitting in my wife’s lap, all 167 pounds of him.Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle or Bronco as we called him.Our late Leonberger Bronco and his sister, the pug Daisy.A new puppy arrives, Rollo, a mini-Australian Shepherd. Hello Rollo! As Rollo got older, he liked to tease Bronco. He pulled and even swung in Bronco’s tail. He also walked over him and sat on him. Bronco was very patient.
My name is Thomas Wikman. I am a software/robotics engineer with a background in physics. I am currently retired. I took early retirement. I am a dog lover, and especially a Leonberger lover, a home brewer, craft beer enthusiast, I’m learning French, and I am an avid reader. I live in Dallas, Texas, but I am originally from Sweden. I am married to Claudia, and we have three children. I have two blogs. The first feature the crazy adventures of our Leonberger Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle as well as information on Leonbergers. The second blog, superfactful, feature information and facts I think are very interesting. With this blog I would like to create a list of facts that are accepted as true among the experts of the field and yet disputed amongst the public or highly surprising. These facts are special and in lieu of a better word I call them super-facts.

Funny video and lovely photos of Bronco. They definitely put a smile on my face. Thank you, Thomas, for this great share. Impressive breed and adorable Bronco. Light and blessings to you, always 🙏✨
Thank you so much Debbie. I agree it is amazing what Guinness Book of World Records cover. I should say we played the sausage game with Bronco too, because we realized that he was a really good at catching things. If we had thought about it first he could have been a contender.
Thank you so much Grant. I should say we did that too with our Bronco. He was really good at catching sausages too but we never thought about a world record or doing it on a show.
Thank you so much John. I can add that we did the same thing at home with Bronco before this, but we never thought about doing it in a show or a world record. If we had thought about this first he could have been a contender.
Thank you so much Gwen. I should add that we did this with Bronco. He was also good at catching sausages but we never thought about putting on a show. If we had thought about that he could have been a contender.
I was at breakfast the other day with four buddies and asked them what they knew about Leonbergers. None of them had ever seen one, so I showed them a photo of Bronco. It was fun to see their reaction.
I think Hodor is a great name for a Leonberger. In fact I just looked it up and there is a Leonberger named Hodor. Hodor was born in Denmark in 2018 and moved to Norway where he lives now. I found him in the Leonberger database.
Very cool, I hadn’t seen that video of Hagrid before. I’m sure he loved the treats and this was a lot of fun for him too. Leonbergers really are enormous.
Thank you so much Pooja. I think it is a pretty fun video and it is so funny that we were doing the same catch sausage games with Bronco. He was also very good at it.
Yes and I wonder if it is an unacknowledged Leonberger skill. They are good swimmers, they are good at pulling carts, and good at chasing after critters (rats, hamsters). This is acknowledged and they have competitions for all that. But maybe sausage catching is something Leonbergers are especially good at too. We tried it with our other dogs but they weren’t good at catching stuff. They missed or it landed in their face. However, Bronco was really quick and precise and caught everything we threw at him.
Yeah, that might be one of the skills they have as Leonbergers. It’s interesting that they’re good swimmers too because some dogs really don’t like water much.
About swimming, it helps that they have webbed paws, and big paws, like Newfoundland dogs. Is some places they use Newfoundland dogs and Leonbergers for water rescue. Bronco loved swimming.
That’s really interesting to know. Out of curiosity would you and your family ever consider getting another Leonberger in the future since you had such a great experience with Bronco?
Yes absolutely. However, right now we can’t get another dog of any kind because Rollo, our mini-Australian Shepherd, would not accept it. He really wants to be the only dog. Perhaps we could try but what happens if it doesn’t work? We just have to deal with that situation.
Thank you navasolanature. I thought it was fun. Our Leonberger was really good at catching sausages too. They are very good swimmers (having webbed paws), they are very good at pulling carts (muscular and big, they pulled cannons during WWI when the Germans ran out of horses), and with their good sense of smell they are very good at chasing and finding critters. Our Leonberger found our run away hamsters a number of times. But they have nationwide competitions for all that. Maybe sausage catching is an unacknowledged Leonberger skill they should have compeitions for.
My dogs were okay at catching a few things, but never would have come close to that record. Bronco was a beautiful dog and I loved how gentle he was with other dogs.
It is kind of silly but I thought it was an amusing video that I found. Thank Carla, yes Bronco was gentle with the other dogs, especially Rollo who was (well is) very rambunctious, climbed all over him, sat on his head, dangled in his tail, and Bronco did not get mad.

That’s a lot of sausages! 😆 Amazing what subjects are covered in the Guinness Book of World Records. Hagrid is a beautiful dog, as was Bronco. 💖

Yes with 173,005 Leonbergers listed in that database at least one of them got to have the name Hodor
