Leonberger Guiness World Record

With this post I just wanted to highlight a fun Leonberger YouTube video regarding a Leonberger who succeeded in creating a new Guiness World Record on the Britain Got Talent show. If you don’t know what a Leonberger is; it is a big fluffy, fun and friendly family dog originating in Germany. It was registered as a new breed in 1846 in the town of Leonberger by a prominent businessman named Heinrich Essig. Leonbergers are related to Saint Bernards, Newfoundland Dogs, and allegedly Great Pyrenees (or Pyrenean mastiffs). You can read about the history of the Leonberger here. I am sorry I realized now that the page is full of typos. I have to fix that at some point.

At the end of this page, I put a fun YouTube video of Leonberger named Hagrid who created a new Guiness World Record. Since I created my Leonberger history page when I had just launched this blog in 2022 and had very few followers many people may have missed the Hagrid movie, so here it is. I can add that I have also added some photos of our late Leonberger Bronco at the end of this post.

A new puppy arrives, Rollo, a mini-Australian Shepherd. Hello Rollo!
On the left is a black and white mini-Australian Shepherd biting the tail of a Leonberger who is on the right.
As Rollo got older, he liked to tease Bronco. He pulled and even swung in Bronco’s tail. He also walked over him and sat on him. Bronco was very patient.

I am married to Claudia, and we have three children. I have two blogs. The first feature the crazy adventures of our Leonberger Le Bronco von der Löwenhöhle as well as information on Leonbergers. The second blog, superfactful, feature information and facts I think are very interesting. With this blog I would like to create a list of facts that are accepted as true among the experts of the field and yet disputed amongst the public or highly surprising. These facts are special and in lieu of a better word I call them super-facts.

    1. Thank you so much Debbie. I agree it is amazing what Guinness Book of World Records cover. I should say we played the sausage game with Bronco too, because we realized that he was a really good at catching things. If we had thought about it first he could have been a contender.

    1. Thank you so much John. I can add that we did the same thing at home with Bronco before this, but we never thought about doing it in a show or a world record. If we had thought about this first he could have been a contender.

  1. I was at breakfast the other day with four buddies and asked them what they knew about Leonbergers. None of them had ever seen one, so I showed them a photo of Bronco. It was fun to see their reaction.

        1. Yes and I wonder if it is an unacknowledged Leonberger skill. They are good swimmers, they are good at pulling carts, and good at chasing after critters (rats, hamsters). This is acknowledged and they have competitions for all that. But maybe sausage catching is something Leonbergers are especially good at too. We tried it with our other dogs but they weren’t good at catching stuff. They missed or it landed in their face. However, Bronco was really quick and precise and caught everything we threw at him.

                1. Yes absolutely. However, right now we can’t get another dog of any kind because Rollo, our mini-Australian Shepherd, would not accept it. He really wants to be the only dog. Perhaps we could try but what happens if it doesn’t work? We just have to deal with that situation.

    1. Thank you navasolanature. I thought it was fun. Our Leonberger was really good at catching sausages too. They are very good swimmers (having webbed paws), they are very good at pulling carts (muscular and big, they pulled cannons during WWI when the Germans ran out of horses), and with their good sense of smell they are very good at chasing and finding critters. Our Leonberger found our run away hamsters a number of times. But they have nationwide competitions for all that. Maybe sausage catching is an unacknowledged Leonberger skill they should have compeitions for.

    1. It is kind of silly but I thought it was an amusing video that I found. Thank Carla, yes Bronco was gentle with the other dogs, especially Rollo who was (well is) very rambunctious, climbed all over him, sat on his head, dangled in his tail, and Bronco did not get mad.
